women's cricket in Europe

Day 1 Thursday 15th August 2013

European Women’s Tournament – Day 1 Thursday 15th August 2013
The Jersey Women got off to a flying start in their European Tournament yesterday as the hosts comfortably beat France in the opening match.
Isabella Costaz struck the ball nicely early on and got France off to a great start but some tight fielding and bowling restricted France to 76 all out. Young Rebecca Blake striking some lovely boundaries before being removed on 15.
Chasing down a comfortable total Jersey started the tournament with a 50 opening partnership between Smith and Dunning. Sadly Smith lost concentration just after drinks but Dunning 30* and Copley 1 saw Jersey 80-1 in 12.1 Overs.

The afternoon’s game saw Jersey take on Germany and after last year’s T20 tournament in Utrecht, Holland where Jersey beat Germany in the final there was a lot to play for. Germany lost the toss and were put into bat by Jersey. Germany got off to a flyer scoring 22 from their first 2 overs, however Jersey were not deterred as edges were found and wickets were coming. Again Jersey’s middle order stopped the flow and runs and with pressure came wickets and Germany ended on 101 in their 20 overs. Jersey only conceding 13 runs last 5 overs only and claiming 3 wickets.
In return Jersey opened strongly before Smith was removed on 12 but Dunning and Copley kept things ticking over and were looking comfortably on 64-1. Dunning fell for 30 which was the start of a mini collapse of the middle order with just 5 runs being scored for 4 wickets. Ridley and Leerson consolidated well and kept the scoring ticking which enabled Jersey a 5 wicket win.

After the first days play Jersey coach Corey Bisson said “I was very impressed with the two performances today, the first game was a very convincing win over France. The second game against Germany was tougher, but I’m delighted with how the whole team contributed to give a vital win and puts us in a strong position for tomorrow’s game”.
